Your Voice Is a Gift

Maggie Doyle 23 September, 2021

So, what exactly does Confirm Not Conform mean?

So often when people think of church, or any organized religion really, they think of doctrine and dogma, sticking to tradition, and blind following. People assume you are meant to fall in line and not really question anything. And, in some communities out there, this may be the case.

However, we would argue that the repression of unique thought, new perspectives, and the multitude of voices is the death of the spiritual. Rather, we must encourage growth as a whole community, and who better to turn to than those who are just starting to consciously build their own faith and develop their own beliefs?

This is what lies at the heart of the Confirm Not Conform program – the idea that your voice is a gift and that gift should be shared. Through this incredible journey, confirmands and their mentors are able to grow together through thoughtful questioning, discussion, and active creation. When we open ourselves up to new perspectives, we open ourselves up to the truly miraculous.

I cannot wait to begin this journey with all who are able to this fall. Here’s a prayer, “Prisms,” written by Katherine Tyler Scott, adapted from Women’s Uncommon Prayers, that we will be closing our first Confirm Not Conform gathering with –

Isms
Fit best in prisms
Perceptions from different angles
Reflecting the light of truth
and brilliance of color
All different
and of Supreme value

Changes,
bringing different hues
from scattered penetration

The light from within and without
So pure
So true
So lovely
So DIFFERENT

To block the light
casts a shadow
To choose one lens
limits our vision
While not destroying truth,
will keep us from experiencing
the wholeness of what we and
others are

While not destroying differences
will create an illusion of sameness

while not destroying our spirits
will imprison them.

Divorced from diversity
Robbed of richness
Exempt from life’s fullest experience
Shallow souls in search

The power to see yourself and
the “selves” of others
awaits you
deep inside.

You have the power to
Shape the view
Create the angle
Reflect the light
Transform isms to prisms

Amen.
