Classes and Book Clubs

WINTER & SPRING 2012

Classes, workshops and book groups at St John's are open to all people. We try to make them free, but occasionally there are fees or costs for materials such as books or videos. That said, no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. See below for details, and if you have any questions or would like to sign up for anything, just email Fr. Steve Hassett: steve@stjohnsross.org.

ETHICAL ISSUES IN WORLD RELIGIONS
Six Tuesday evenings, Jan 30 through Mar 6
7pm to 8.30
Bill Rankin will convene a group to discuss Peggy Morgan and Clive Lawton's book Ethical Issues in Six Religious Traditions. The book can be purchased through the parish office or through Amazon, and the first section on Hinduism should be read in advance of the first class meeting. The text covers such issues as religious identity and authority, marriage and the family, the quality and value of life, and war and peace, among others. The religious perspectives are Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim. The course will meet in the Youth Room from 7pm until 8.30, and the format will be seminar style group discussion. The course is open to all, and is free except for the cost of the book.

THE THREE-LEGGED STOOL: Scripture, Tradition, Reason
Ongoing weekly discussions beginning January 30
Mornings: Mondays from 10am to noon
Evenings: Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm

A weekly gathering that brings together people of all levels of ability and interest to read and discuss texts from scripture, sources of tradition such as The Sayings of the Desert Fathers and Mothers, Spiritual Classics, and contemporary media and current-events news. The goal is to engage in small-group discussion and study exercises that seek to apply the wisdom of scripture and tradition to our own lives today. Led by Fr. Steve. These gatherings are free and open to all, and do not require advance preparation or prior participation.
